The Royal Geographical Society is steeped in a tradition of exploration, celebrating the finest and most determined geographers who have changed the way we see the world. As the Society’s official magazine, we recognise the importance of young people in advancing geography towards new frontiers.
If you’ve undertaken a project that you think might interest Geographical, send us details of the project, how it could make a difference, and where you want to take it in the future. We’ll be selecting the most interesting projects and contacting you for an interview for the ‘Young Explorers’ page of our website. Here, your work will be exposed to some of the finest world geographers.
If you’ve led or conducted a project as part of a university course, volunteering programme, or especially of your own initiative, we want to hear about it! We’re interested in your ideas: so don’t let the theme restrict you. Your project could encompass photography, community outreach, an expedition, a technological pursuit – get creative with geography!

The new ‘Young Explorers’ programme draws inspiration from the ‘I’m a Geographer’ column of Geographical. The world’s great geographers have featured in the column, dedicated to telling the stories of the inspiring people that make a difference through their work. By featuring in the ‘Young Explorers’ programme, you’ll sit alongside names such as Simon Reeve, George Monbiot, Liz Bonnin, and Danny Dorling to name but a few.
If you consider yourself a ‘Young Explorer’ and are under 21 (or an undergraduate student), send your answers to the questions below to jacob@geographical.co.uk. If you’ve been shortlisted to feature, we'll contact you to arrange an interview.
